Did you catch my other post about ‘Downplaying your Problems instead of your Pride?’ A lot of change is happening in my world due to a health concern of a family member. In trying to protect my loved one pride defiantly raises its “we still look perfect” flag when instead I should be wrapping myself in a flag of utter surrender as this is a rough chapter. My desire is to always encourage you friend however today I’m wrestling the neverending problem of pride myself.
How do we push past pride?
1. Getting on our knees and asking for help is a start. Help in the way of wisdom, His wisdom, not our earthly wisdom from book clubs or universities. Like the old Nike commercials, Just Do It!
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (NIV)
2. Speaking outright to God about how you are worried or fearful is fine. You aren’t losing heaven bound points by lamenting. In the Old Testament there are several references to wailing and gnashing of teeth. Not that I suggest you rip up your best outfit, but if you feel the need to shred some material to express your torment then do what you gotta do girl. Judgement free zone here friends.
I Peter 5:7 Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (ESV)
And just because there are so many good verses about God’s grace here’s another:
2 Corth 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (ESV)
3. Open your Bible to remember His truths, allow those to speak into your heart about your worth, your faith, your walk with God. The devil wants nothing more than to knock you off the course God has set in action for you – and it’s usually not done with sinful behavior. Self doubt or an overcommitted schedule can keep us from turning to God’s love letter spelled out in all 66 books of the Bible. Yes, even in the early gloom and doom books God’s love is still evident through His desire to be in relationship with us despite ourselves.
2 Corinthians 10:5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. (NLT)
4. Claim it as a truth that you don’t have to be on this journey alone. Don’t feel like you are bothering anyone when you say “I need some friends to walk alongside me for this season in life.” Talk about shifting the wheat from the weeds in finding out who your true friends are – and also seeing the beauty in strangers who bless just because. Accept the grace from others in meals offered or ears leant or help of any sort. Then one day be prepared to offer grace to another as a blessing for what God can do when we seek a pride-free life.
Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)
