You’ve made a decision, you just can’t live in your body ‘as is’ a moment longer. Too many Monday mornings have been wasted with the promise of getting that baby weight off and you’re simply fed up with defeat. You have to do something now as you can hear your “before” clothes mocking you each time you walk in that darn closet to yet again choose yoga pants.
You’ve made a meal plan, dusted off those sneakers and downloaded a fitness app. Great! Mindset is one of the key indicators that you will succeed in this new fitness endeavor. But beyond laying out your workout clothes or signing up for a class there’s another must do to checkoff.

Get Thick Skin.
“What?” you say. “I don’t need to be any thicker as it is!” No no dear one, totally figurative, because as dedicated as you are on Sunday night practically giddy it’s a fresh week ahead, Monday morning alarm clock reality will hit. Are you ready to quiet the inner demons before you even throw back the covers?
Kids subvert our plans with middle of the night wake ups. Husband’s snore. Life’s worries take hold in the middle of the night. Cold weather makes heading out in the dark simply miserable. Putting on a workout DVD in a quiet sleeping home seems cruel to a worn out tired Momma looking at an inviting sofa and a soft throw nearby. Until you get moving. And that’s the key – move.
Getting yourself out of a wonderfully warm bed and into restrictive workout clothing, throwing down an egg or a protein shake when you feel like you were just in the kitchen cleaning up from the night before is not one of my favorite times of day. Until you can shush the inner mean girl who tells you this isn’t worth it, this won’t work, you don’t stick to anything long enough to see change or (insert your personal favorite shaming quote here.)
“Man I wish I hadn’t gotten that workout in” said nobody ever.
Moving your body to the exercise destination and starting said workout is an accomplishment of which to be proud. Especially if it entails getting in a cold car and driving dark roads that you are sure only contain drunks or other crazy gym rats. It’s a lonely time, but if you can thicken your skin to quiet the hater in your head, it can actually become an empowering time.
You did it. You got out of bed. You are moving. Look around, you are the minority.You are making a difference in your health slowly and surely. Change is happening one missed snooze day at a time. And it’s not easy, and a lot of times sweating ain’t pretty. Groaning my way through burpees before dawn is not gonna make it on my highlight reel of life. But starting to feel shoulders cap and biceps pop will.
Most certainly listening to the “you can’t” wasn’t how I won the Gold’s Gym 12 week challenge at my gym. A year later I’ve actually been able to silence that annoying girl in my head who reminded me of every diet I ever started yet failed before results were even seen. She tried to remind me the first time I took a Body Combat class what an idiot I look like in a group setting or how I’ll never lift the heavy weights in a Body Pump class. Now that I’ve set her straight and held my own on weight loss while adding in lifting and high intensity workouts, she doesn’t even show up to nag me any longer.
However thick skin is needed still because when others start noticing the cuts in your arms or dress sizes going down, jealousy raises her nasty green head. I’ve been told by working moms “well one day when I have all of the time you do, I’ll do something about losing this weight.” On the flip side I’ve had stay at home moms say “well my time home with my kids means I don’t have a gym babysit them for me.”
Side note: for six months when I first started my fitness crusade I was up at 4:40 AM to get out the door to the gym then home before my kids woke up. I teach two Les Mills GRIT classes now three mornings a week and again I’m up at 4:40 AM so I can be home as the kids are waking up.
Remember that everyone is fighting their own internal battles so sometimes snarky comments have nothing to do with you but more to do with the doubt and lack of self-worth or dedication another person has. Remember what it took to get your mind ready to better yourself and your health. But it’s still a good idea to keep that skin thick. Nothing and nobody should make you feel bad about taking care of yourself first so you can take care of the people in your life. As the saying goes, at first they’ll ask you why you are doing it and later they’ll ask you how you did it. In between you might hear some not so nice comments or judgey statements, but learn to let them bounce off. You’ve got a workout to get in plus some high fives with that girl in the mirror who is doing instead of doubting.
